When it comes to cleaning our homes and offices, we often don't think about the potential health risks that may come with using traditional cleaning products. Many of these products contain ingredients that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders, and allergic reactions.

One of the main culprits in traditional cleaning products is synthetic fragrances. Nearly 95% of chemicals used in cleaning products contain synthetic fragrances, which are derived from petroleum. These fragrances are added to a wide range of products, including carpet and floor cleaners, disinfectants, air fresheners, and laundry detergents.

Another ingredient to watch out for is parabens. These are commonly used as preservatives in cleaning products and have been linked to cancer. Other ingredients to avoid include artificial colors, preservatives, petroleum, phosphates, ammonia, chlorine bleach, abrasives, ethanol, propylene glycol, SLS/SLES, DEA, animal ingredients, and testing on animals.

Fortunately, there are cleaning products available that are made without these potentially harmful ingredients. Biogreen cleaning products, for example, are made without synthetic fragrances, parabens, artificial colors, preservatives, petroleum, phosphates, ammonia, chlorine bleach, abrasives, ethanol, propylene glycol, SLS/SLES, DEA, animal ingredients, and testing on animals.

Potential harmful ingredients to avoid:

Alcohol: may increase the chance of getting throat or liver cancer

Color’s / Coaltar Dyes: may cause eye damage and could contain carcinogenic

DEA: Is a foam boosting surfactant, a potential carcinogenic

Fragrances: Can be potential carcinogenic and may cause brain damage

PEG: May cause dioxane, a potential cancer causing agent, endocrine disrupter, and estrogen mimic.

Sodium Fluoride: Has been shown to be a potential carcinogenic

Sodium Laureth / Lauryl Sulfate (SLS/SLES): may contain nitrosamine and dioxane, a potential carcinogenic, contain endocrine disrupter, estrogen mimic, and possibly cause hair loss. It builds up in the heart, liver, may cause rough skin, and could lead to improper eye development

Propylene Glycol (Antifreeze): Shown to show kidney and liver abnormalities in animal studies. May inhibit skin cell growth and irritate the skin

Toluene: May be an endocrine disrupter, potential cancel causing agent, and may cause birth defects

By making an informed decision about the cleaning products we use, we can help protect our health and the health of our loved ones. We encourage you to read the labels on your cleaning products and to choose products that are free of potentially harmful ingredients.
